Solon Speech and Debate Teams Excel at National Tournament in Iowa

Solon’s Speech and Debate teams delivered exceptional performances at the National Speech and Debate Association’s National Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, earning national rankings and top honors among thousands of competitors from across the country.

Students from both Solon Middle School and Solon High School demonstrated outstanding talent in a wide range of events, including Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum, Original Oratory, Congressional Debate, and Extemporaneous Speaking.

Coach Trina Castro praised the students’ achievements, saying, “Our future is bright, and at Nationals, our students proved it. I’m incredibly proud of how each competitor performed; with thousands of entries across the country, no one should discount what it means to stand among the nation’s best.”

At the middle school level, Anushka Pagare reached the semifinals in Declamation, placing in the top 12 nationally with her emotional delivery of a previously published speech. Olivia Shin advanced to the octafinals in Lincoln Douglas Debate, finishing among the top 16 in the nation. Jagvi Yadav and Chris Wei also made it to the octafinals in Public Forum Debate, impressing judges with their strong teamwork and well-reasoned arguments.

Marina Han reached the quarterfinals in Original Oratory, placing in the top 24 with her powerful and passionate speech. Additionally, Tejas Chatterjee, Jagvi Yadav, and Chris Wei were recognized as Top Speakers in their respective events.

At the high school level, Adhithiya Balamurugan advanced to the semifinals in Congressional Debate in the Senate chamber, showcasing a deep understanding of government and policy. Nandita Srikumar advanced to the quarterfinals in the House chamber, distinguishing herself with her legislative writing and persuasive speaking style.

Mandi Lu earned octafinalist honors in United States Extemporaneous Speaking, delivering sharp, insightful commentary on domestic issues with limited preparation time.

These national recognitions reflect the hard work, skill, and dedication of Solon’s students and coaches. Their accomplishments are a source of pride for the school community and a sign of continued excellence in speech and debate.
