Spotlight of the Week Director: Matt Damschroder-Championing Children, Families, and Public Service Innovation

This week, we are proud to spotlight Matt Damschroder, Director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), a committed public servant whose leadership and personal journey reflect deep compassion, innovation, and dedication to Ohio’s families.
Appointed by Governor Mike DeWine in March 2021, Director Damschroder brings a wealth of experience and a heartfelt connection to the work of child and family services. As a former foster parent and adoptive father of two, he intimately understands the transformative power of adoption and foster care, not only for children but also for the families who welcome them.
Before leading ODJFS, Director Damschroder served as Director of the Ohio Department of Administrative Services (DAS), where he championed customer service, advanced secure and innovative technology through the InnovateOhio Platform, and streamlined procurement processes. His tenure at DAS also strengthened state efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion, including promoting Ohio as a model employer for individuals with disabilities.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a pivotal role in guiding Ohio’s response by leveraging data and technology to inform health decisions and ensuring the procurement and distribution of over 140 million pieces of personal protective equipment.
Director Damschroder’s public service career also includes leadership at the Ohio Secretary of State’s office, where he served as State Elections Director, Assistant Secretary of State, and Chief of Staff. He previously led the Franklin County Board of Elections, overseeing one of the nation’s largest local elections jurisdictions.
A Columbus native, Director Damschroder holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy and Management from the John Glenn College of Public Affairs and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Max M. Fisher College of Business, both at The Ohio State University.
With his deep-rooted belief in the power of family, dedication to public service, and forward-thinking leadership, Director Matt Damschroder continues to be a vital force in shaping a stronger, more supportive Ohio for children and families.
