Toledo Public Schools to Restrict Student Cell Phone Use During School Hours
Toledo Public Schools will implement a new cell phone policy beginning in August, requiring students to store their phones in secure pouches or lockboxes during the school day.
The decision, announced by the district on Friday, aligns with Ohio House Bill 250, which was signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine last year. The law requires all public school districts in the state to adopt formal policies regulating student cell phone use by the 2025–2026 school year.
According to the district, students attending high schools and magnet schools will be required to place their phones in Yondr pouches, which will remain locked throughout the school day. Meanwhile, students in K–8 buildings will store their phones in secure lockboxes in the morning and retrieve them at dismissal.
“This legislation was driven by Governor Mike DeWine’s concern that cell phones are a significant source of distraction in classrooms and negatively impact student learning and focus,” reads a statement from Toledo Public Schools.
District officials acknowledge that the policy marks a significant change, but they believe it is necessary to foster a more focused and engaging educational environment. They emphasized that additional guidance on expectations and procedures will be shared with families in the coming weeks.
This policy shift reflects a broader commitment to upholding the right to education by minimizing distractions that can undermine student achievement.
