United Local Schools Opens New State-of-the-Art K-12 Building
After years of planning and construction, United Local Schools officially unveiled its brand-new K-12 building on Saturday. The ribbon-cutting event welcomed community members for a preview ahead of the September 2 start of classes.
For veteran teacher Laura Shepard, who has spent 35 years at United Local and was once a student herself, the transition is bittersweet. Watching the old building come down was emotional, but she believes the new space marks a fresh beginning.
The school was designed with innovation and collaboration in mind, according to Superintendent Lance Hostetler. Modern “maker spaces” allow students to work on projects in flexible group settings, while a new media center, equipped with a 3D printer, replaces the traditional library.
While embracing technology, the district also preserved its roots. A U-shaped logo symbolizes the union of 11 original schools into the current elementary, middle, and high schools. A “legacy wall” near the entrance displays memorabilia celebrating the district’s history.
Some final steps remain, including demolition of parts of the old building and completion of a new parking lot. But the new school is ready to welcome students into a modern, inspiring environment.
Every child has the right to quality education in a safe and supportive environment. This new school stands as a commitment to that right, ensuring opportunities for learning, creativity, and growth.
