Metal Found in Mulch Prompts Playground Closures in New Philadelphia Schools

The New Philadelphia School District has closed all district playgrounds after discovering that mulch recently spread across school grounds contained pieces of metal.
In a statement released Friday, district officials confirmed that the contaminated mulch was used at playgrounds, the Quaker Dome, and in landscaping beds.
“In the interest of keeping our students, staff, and community safe, all district playgrounds will be closed until this issue is resolved,” the district said. Officials added that work is already underway to address the problem and ensure the areas are safe before reopening.
The closures are being taken as a precaution to protect students and their families while the cleanup moves forward.
Every child has the right to the highest attainable standard of health and to a safe environment. By closing playgrounds until hazards are removed, the district is acting to protect children’s well-being and uphold their right to play in safety.
