YSU Tightens Security with Metal Detectors for High School Football Events

The recent shooting of a Cardinal Mooney student outside Stambaugh Stadium has sparked urgent action to protect students attending school sporting events.
In response, Youngstown State University announced that starting with this Friday’s Mooney–Boardman football game, metal detectors will be in place at all high school football games hosted at YSU.
Becky Rose, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, explained that the change is part of a broader commitment to student and community safety.
“We are committed to ensuring a secure environment for all attendees,” she said, noting that YSU will work closely with local law enforcement. While the new security step involves screening with metal detectors, Rose emphasized that the process of welcoming students, families, and fans into the stadium remains largely unchanged.
This decision comes just days after YSU President Bill Johnson, in his State of the University address, highlighted the importance of upgrading campus security.
For many students, high school football games are not just about sports; they are about belonging, friendship, and celebration. Ensuring that these gatherings remain safe is a reminder of a community’s responsibility to protect its children.
Every child has the right to grow up in an environment where their safety is a priority. Children have the right to be protected from violence and harm. Strengthening security at these events affirms that commitment.
