Mentor Schools Cancel Classes Over Driver Shortage

Parents in Mentor, Ohio, woke up to an unexpected disruption Tuesday morning when the district announced just after 6 a.m. that all schools would be closed for the day.
The last-minute notice cited a “large number of absences” in the transportation department, leaving the district without enough bus drivers to cover all routes.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the district expressed regret for the inconvenience: “We realize this may cause an inconvenience, but we do not have the staff available to transport all of our students to school and from school today. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we work through this challenge. Thank you.”
The apology acknowledged the strain the closure placed on parents who had to rearrange work schedules, childcare, and daily routines. The incident also raises broader questions about staffing shortages, reliance on transportation systems, and the ripple effects such gaps have on children’s access to learning.
While the unexpected closure disrupted families today, it also highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions in school transportation. Every child has the right to uninterrupted learning, and ensuring reliable, safe, and consistent transport must be part of that commitment.
