Ohio Court Records Reveal Earlier Child Welfare Concerns in Siders Family Case
Child welfare officials in Ohio had been concerned about the wellbeing and living conditions of children involved with Gary and Elizabeth Siders for years prior to the family’s child endangerment investigation, court records have shown.
Caseworkers noted concerns during home visits in 2020 and 2021, such as concerns with the children’s education, healthcare, and home environment in Gallia County.
The records show that some children were unable to speak and that caseworkers noted gnats and cockroaches in the home and concerns about the children’s medical condition.
One court document said the family had previously been under a case plan but failed to make improvements after the case was closed. It stated that the children may continue to be at risk of harm if they are not supervised.
The children were later returned to the care of the Siderses, despite the concerns noted by officials.
The previous records have led to concerns regarding the evaluation of child welfare issues and the protection measures taken upon the children’s return home.
Gallia County Children Services Director Dana Glassburn said the agency would not comment on anything beyond what was already available in court records.
The case was brought back to the forefront on June 30 when investigators located 16 children associated with the Siders family in Vinton County. Gary and Elizabeth Siders are now charged with several crimes in the investigation.
The developments illustrate the need for ongoing monitoring of children’s welfare where concerns have been raised in the past regarding their education, health, home environment and potential harm.
The case also highlights issues with the implementation of case plans, their review and upkeep after children are returned to their parents, especially when there is no long-term benefit from previous interventions.
