National Adoption Month 2026 Highlights Need for Permanent, Loving Families for Children

As the United States observes National Adoption Month this November, attention is turning to children in foster care awaiting permanent families and the importance of providing them with safe, stable and loving homes.

Observed annually since 1995, National Adoption Month raises awareness about adoption, particularly the needs of children who cannot return to their birth families and are waiting for permanent placements.

The observance also encourages conversations about children’s emotional well-being, identity, family relationships and the lifelong experiences associated with adoption.

According to American Adoptions, adoption is more than a legal process. It involves lasting emotional and social adjustments for children, birth parents and adoptive families.

For adopted children, questions about belonging, personal identity and connections with birth families may arise as they grow older. Experts therefore encourage adoptive parents to create supportive environments where children can discuss their experiences without fear or pressure.

The organisation also emphasises the importance of respecting children’s privacy and allowing them to decide when and how to share their adoption stories.

Throughout November, individuals and communities are encouraged to support foster care organisations, listen to adoptees and birth parents, and promote accurate information about adoption.

Prospective adoptive parents are equally encouraged to understand the legal, financial and emotional responsibilities involved before beginning the process.

National Adoption Month serves as a reminder that every child deserves safety, belonging and lasting family support, while meaningful assistance for children and families must continue beyond November.
