OhioKAN to Equip Schools and Child-Serving Agencies to Better Support Kinship Families
The Ohio Kinship and Adoption Navigator (OhioKAN) is introducing a Community Learning series to support schools, caregivers and child and family-serving organisations in Ohio to build support for kinship and post-adoptive families.
The series will kick off on September 23 with “Building Strong Networks for Students & Families” from 1-2 p.m. on Zoom. The free session will be hosted by Britney Breidenstein, OhioKAN Co-Director, and is designed for educators and school staff who work with children from kinship and adoptive families.
Participants will examine the special needs of kinship and adoptive caregivers and how to recognize students who might need extra support. The session will also increase school professionals’ comfort level with engaging families with OhioKAN resources.
Participants will be given an electronic copy of OhioKAN’s Guide to Creating Kinship-Friendly Schools as an extra resource for schools looking to make their school more supportive for children in kinship and adoptive families.
The learning series will be ongoing through 2027, and will include sessions for caregivers, county partners and other child-serving professionals. Future sessions are Program Overview & General Information (Nov. 12), Supports for Kinship & Adoptive Caregivers (Feb. 17), and Strengthening Partnerships Across the Child & Family System (May 12).
The programme is a reflection of OhioKAN’s and the Ohio Department of Children and Youth’s dedication to supporting kinship and adoptive families, the agency states.
The September session is for Ohio educators and child-serving stakeholders to deepen their knowledge of kinship families and enhance the support they can offer children in school settings.
