Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has filed an emergency motion with the state Supreme Court, requesting that Columbus City Schools be ordered to transport charter and private school students seeking mediation. The district has claimed it cannot provide transportation this year. Yost argues that state law supports his request and urges the court to ensure these students are bused while his lawsuit is pending.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost criticized Columbus City Schools for not meeting its legal obligations regarding transportation for students seeking mediation. He highlighted that parents are struggling to adjust their lives due to the lack of transport, emphasizing the urgency for the court to intervene. Yost referenced state law (R.C. 3327.02(E)(2)) requiring the district to provide transportation during mediation requests. In contrast, the school district stated that they cut transportation routes this year based on state law.
Families impacted by Columbus City Schools (CCS) expressed frustration over not being properly notified about the exclusion of their students from bus routes. Sina Draughn, a grandparent of charter school students, reported losing her job due to transportation issues. CCS claimed that communication regarding the changes was sent to families in June. As of now, there is no timeline for when the state Supreme Court might hear Attorney General Dave Yost’s emergency motion, and CCS has yet to respond to the initial complaint.
