Akron Children’s Hospital has strengthened its partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, one of the top pediatric health systems in the country, to provide advanced cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery care to children and teens in Northern Ohio.

This collaboration builds on a decade-long partnership between the two institutions, which has focused on kidney transplants for pediatric patients. In April 2024, their joint efforts expanded to include specialties such as otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), hepatology (liver disease), and bone marrow transplants. With the addition of cardiology, the partnership now encompasses five key pediatric specialties.

According to Dr. John Lane, director of pediatric cardiology at Akron Children’s, the new pediatric heart collaboration offers families a “built-in second opinion” from a team of pediatric cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Specialists from both hospitals will meet regularly to review cases and develop treatment plans, including for children with new heart-related diagnoses and those diagnosed with congenital heart defects before birth at Akron Children’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center.
