Cincinnati Public Schools’ Board of Education will hold its first meeting of 2025 on Wednesday, where the board will decide on its new president and vice president. The meeting, originally scheduled for Monday, was delayed due to heavy snow.
Eve Bolton, who served as school board president last year, had a contentious tenure. Under her leadership, former Superintendent Iranetta Wright resigned, and the board appointed Shauna Murphy as the permanent superintendent without conducting a formal search or review process. This decision led to dissent among some board members—Ben Lindy, Kendra Mapp, and Brandon Craig—who argued the lack of transparency in Murphy’s appointment. “When you appoint a superintendent with no prior announcement, with no process… that feels like a real absence of transparency,” Lindy remarked after the 4-3 vote in favor of Murphy.
Additionally, a major restructuring plan, which will affect the school assignments for hundreds of students, was passed during Bolton’s presidency, sparking criticism from both board members and community members who opposed the changes.
The selection of new leadership comes amid a period of significant tension and uncertainty for the school district.
