Students from Columbus Downtown High School’s Culinary Arts program received scholarships from Due Amici, a local restaurant, recognizing their academic and culinary achievements. Jeff Mathes, owner of Due Amici and a supporter of the school district, initiated the scholarships to support these aspiring chefs and help build a future workforce. Inspired by the program’s success, Mathes used the restaurant’s fundraising efforts to create these scholarships, aiding students in pursuing higher education in culinary arts.
The scholarship celebration at Due Amici featured a tasting of the restaurant’s popular dishes and was attended by Columbus City Schools staff, students, and notable guests, including COSI President Dr. Frederic Bertley and former Mayor Michael B. Coleman. Dr. Bertley emphasized the connection between science and culinary arts, highlighting that chefs apply scientific principles in their work. The event honored the students as future leaders in the culinary field.
The scholarships awarded to Columbus Downtown High School (CDHS) Culinary Arts students are a strong motivator as they advance their education. Many will attend Columbus State Community College’s Hospitality Management & Culinary Arts program, which offers extensive hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art facility. Graduate Malayah Perry expressed gratitude for the financial support, which will help her pursue her culinary dreams. The recognition of these students underscores growing interest in CCS talent from both local businesses and national institutions, with support from Due Amici and community leaders emphasizing the students’ achievements.
