Nationwide Children’s Hospital Unveils Massive Building Expansion Project

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is solidifying its reputation as a premier pediatric healthcare provider, welcoming nearly 1.8 million patients from all 50 states and 44 countries in 2024. The hospital’s national reach is key to attracting top specialists and ensuring access to cutting-edge care.
To support this growth, Nationwide Children’s is undertaking the largest investment in its history—a $1.27 billion, 14-story acute care tower set to open in 2028. Designed as a fraternal twin to the existing 10-year-old tower, the new facility will house the hospital’s sickest patients, featuring expanded emergency and critical care services, oncology, a three-floor neonatal intensive care unit, and additional surgical space. Once completed, it will add more than 430 beds to the hospital’s capacity.
“Our goal isn’t just to build more buildings—it’s to provide the best possible care,” said Patty McClimon, Senior Vice President of Strategic and Facilities Planning, highlighting the need for modern spaces that support today’s medical advancements.
The new tower will be seamlessly integrated with existing facilities, particularly the emergency department, ensuring a cohesive experience for patients, families, and staff. Ed Cheshire, Manager of Design and Construction, emphasized the importance of learning from past projects and collaborating with other children’s hospitals to incorporate best practices into the expansion.
