Grandfather’s Case Dismissed After 16 Ohio Children Rescued From ‘Horrific’ Conditions

The criminal case against Gary Siders Sr., the grandfather of 16 children rescued from a home in Vinton County, Ohio, has been dismissed after a court found him incompetent to stand trial.

Siders, 73, had faced 16 counts of child endangerment following the children’s rescue from a Hamden home in June. Court records show that he was found incompetent to stand trial last month and was considered unlikely to regain the mental capacity required to participate in legal proceedings.

The case was dismissed without prejudice, meaning it could potentially be brought again under certain circumstances. The court will continue to have jurisdiction over Siders while authorities consider whether civil commitment proceedings should be initiated under Ohio law. Civil commitment can require a person to receive mental health treatment through a court order.

Siders was arrested on June 30 alongside his wife, Christina Siders; their son, Gary Siders Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Siders. The 16 children were removed from the home after authorities described the conditions there as horrific.

While the case against Siders Sr. has been dismissed, proceedings involving the other adults continue. Christina, Gary Jr. and Elizabeth Siders remain jailed, each facing 19 counts of child endangerment. Gary Jr. and Elizabeth also face four counts each related to the alleged sexual abuse of a child who was not among the 16 children rescued.

Two other men, Brandon Henderson and Joshua Saunders, also face charges arising from a separate investigation involving the alleged sexual abuse of two children.

The cases remain ongoing as authorities continue to address the circumstances surrounding the children and the allegations against those charged.
