Vinton County Child Abuse Case: Prosecutors Fight Bond Reduction for Mother of 16

Prosecutors in Vinton County, Ohio, are seeking a judge’s ruling on a request to lower the bond of a mother charged with multiple child endangerment cases after investigators found her 16 children in a home that was in “deplorable conditions.

Elizabeth Siders, 33, is on a $300,000 cash or surety bond. Her attorney has requested that it be replaced with a recognizance bond, claiming she has no criminal record and is not a flight risk.

Vinton County prosecutors filed an opposition in an Aug. 17 filing, saying the allegations are serious and there may be more felony charges and an ongoing competency issue.

The case started June 30 when investigators executed court-authorized search warrants in a home on Ohmer Street in Hamden and seized 16 children, ranging in age from about 18 months to 18 years.

The children were mostly kept in a room that is approximately 12 by 12 feet and were living in conditions that posed serious child welfare concerns, authorities said. Seven children were reportedly hospitalised and two were airlifted to higher level trauma centres for treatment.

The children were then taken from the house and put into the care of the state.

The case has been a strain on Vinton County’s child welfare system. Emergency funding of $1 million was approved by the Ohio Legislature to provide assistance to the children and their services when they were removed, reportedly doubling the number of children in the county agency’s temporary care overnight.

While the court case continues, the safety, medical care, emotional health and access to stable care of the children are key issues, with authorities working to establish their long-term care needs.
