Ohio CASA Marks 30 Years of Advocacy with Milestone Celebrate Children Conference

Nearly 700 CASA volunteers, court staff, attorneys, and child welfare professionals came together in downtown Columbus for the Ohio CASA/GAL Association’s 30th Annual Celebrate Children Conference, the largest gathering in the event’s history.
Over three days, attendees participated in training sessions focused on child mental wellness, trauma recovery, courtroom advocacy, and addressing addiction within families. The event also honored outstanding CASA volunteers and child welfare professionals for their extraordinary dedication to Ohio’s children.
A highlight of the conference was the keynote address by Elizabeth Smart, author, advocate, and survivor, who shared her powerful story of hope and healing. Her message, that resilience and compassion can light the path through trauma, deeply resonated with attendees.
Ohio Department of Children and Youth Director Kara Wente inspired participants with a reminder of their purpose: “Our mission is simple: do what’s right for children. It is a promise.”
The conference closed with a session by Charles Appelstein, emphasizing strength-based care and the importance of helping every child see their potential.
Ohio CASA programs train and support community volunteers who advocate for children experiencing abuse or neglect, serving more than 9,000 children each year.
This milestone event reaffirms that every child has the right to be heard, protected, and supported by caring adults acting in their best interests. Through CASA’s unwavering commitment, Ohio continues to strengthen that promise for its children.
