Ohio Launches Tressel Fitness Challenge for Students

Ohio schools are launching a new Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, a modern take on the old Presidential Fitness Test.

Led by Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel, the program invites fourth through eighth graders to take part in shuttle runs, push-ups, sit-ups, planks, and other activities, while also tracking their sleep and nutrition habits.

Unlike the old test, this challenge is voluntary, inclusive, and adaptable, with students earning bronze, silver, or gold certificates for maintaining healthy routines over 10, 20, or 30 days. Already, more than 159,000 Ohio students from 631 schools and homeschools have signed up.

The initiative comes as state lawmakers debate House Bill 322, which would create a statewide Ohio Fitness Test modeled on the former Presidential Fitness Test.

Supporters say it could help fight childhood obesity and encourage healthy habits. But physical education experts caution that the old model was not always a fair or accurate measure of fitness.

The new Team Tressel program aims to build lifelong habits, not pressure. Along with exercise, students are challenged to read before bedtime instead of looking at screens, drink more water, and reflect in a workbook about their favorite activities.

This fitness challenge touches directly on children’s rights: the right to health through fitness and nutrition, the right to education that builds both body and mind, and the right to play and participation in activities that support overall well-being.
