Ohio Preschool Launches Creative Program to Combat Decline in Children’s Fine Motor Skills

A preschool in Ohio has introduced a creative programme aimed at helping young children strengthen their fine motor skills after educators noticed more children struggling with basic classroom activities.
The Learning Experience Academy of Early Education in Westlake launched the “Little Goal Getters” programme, which combines outdoor play, sports activities and imagination to support children’s physical development.
Teachers across many schools have reported that some preschool and kindergarten children find tasks such as holding pencils, using scissors, stacking blocks and tying shoes more difficult than before. While many initially linked the challenge to the COVID-19 pandemic, educators say the concerns have continued years later.
The new programme focuses on age-appropriate activities designed to improve coordination, balance and hand control.
Infants take part in activities involving sports balls during tummy time, while older babies practice movements such as hitting balls and making baskets. Toddlers participate in kicking, jumping, throwing and catching exercises. Preschool children engage in activities like passing soccer balls, shooting baskets, ring toss and obstacle movements.
Claire Lambert, the centre director, said the programme allows children to learn through play while developing important skills.
She explained that outdoor activities help children explore movement, teamwork and coordination while enjoying themselves.
Child development experts often emphasise that fine motor skills play an important role in early learning because they support writing, self-care and problem-solving abilities.
The programme organisers hope the approach will help children build confidence and prepare them for future academic success through enjoyable and interactive learning experiences.
