Gov. Mike DeWine is set to sign HB47, a bill mandating AEDs in Ohio schools and sports venues, following alarming statistics from the American Heart Association that sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among student-athletes. The bill requires AEDs in all public, chartered nonpublic schools, and municipally owned sports venues.

The signing will take place at Worthington Kilbourne High School, accompanied by Canen Dickman, whose life was saved by an AED during a soccer practice. Also present will be Nicole Ward, founder of the Make Them Know Your Name Foundation, advocating for heart health education and CPR/AED training across Ohio.

This legislation is personal for 9-year-old Cooper Batchler and 16-year-old Aiden Williamson, both impacted by heart conditions. Batchler, an actor and soccer player, experienced a frightening incident two years ago when he felt his heart racing in the gym, followed by passing out.

Both Cooper Batchler and Aiden Williamson survived life-threatening incidents thanks to quick action and AEDs. Batchler, experiencing a heart issue at Harrison Elementary School, received CPR and was found to have a heartbeat by an AED. He recovered at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Williamson, at Warren County Career Center, suffered sudden cardiac arrest and was revived by medics using an AED. Both incidents underscore the importance of AEDs in saving lives during emergencies.
