Two Elyria schools were briefly placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after deputies pursued a suspect through a nearby neighborhood.

According to Elyria City Schools, at 1:34 p.m., both Eastern Heights Middle School and Eastern Heights High School were placed on lockout status while law enforcement responded to the chase. School officials emphasized that “all students and staff are safe and activities within the school are continuing as normal.”

Elyria Police reported that the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office had initiated a traffic stop near Warden and Adams streets at about 1:06 p.m.

The driver, identified as Travone Devonte Lee Edwards, fled from the vehicle as deputies approached. He abandoned the car in front of a residence on Cambridge Avenue and ran on foot, prompting the school lockout.

While law enforcement successfully contained the situation, every child has the right to feel safe in school and to learn in an environment free from fear.
