Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined Piketon Jr./Sr. High School to celebrate the launch of a new school-based health clinic funded through nearly $1.7 million from the Appalachian Children’s Health Initiative.

The clinic, developed in partnership with Valley View Health Centers, will provide primary care and behavioral health services to students, school staff, families, and the surrounding community. Officials say on-campus care will help reduce barriers to treatment, improve student well-being, and support academic achievement.

This facility is among more than 28 projects supported by the initiative, which has invested over $64 million to build or expand health clinics and workforce programs, serving 61,000 students and 375,000 residents across 20 Appalachian counties.

These efforts are part of the broader $500 million Appalachian Community Grant Program, launched in 2022 to strengthen communities in Ohio’s 32-county Appalachian region.

The establishment of this clinic reinforces children’s fundamental right to the highest attainable standard of health. By bringing essential physical and behavioral health services directly to schools, the initiative promotes equitable access to care, enabling students to learn and thrive.
