Nationwide Children’s Hospital $100M Expansion to Improve Pediatric Care and Child Safeguarding in Ohio

Toledo, Ohio — Nationwide Children’s Hospital has announced plans to invest between $100 million and $150 million over the next five years to expand outpatient pediatric services in northwest Ohio, a move expected to strengthen access to child healthcare and enhance safeguarding outcomes across the region.
The expansion will include the construction of two new outpatient facilities designed to house diagnostic testing, therapy services, behavioral health programs, and both primary and specialty pediatric care. Hospital officials said the initiative aims to reduce the need for families to travel long distances for specialized services while improving continuity of care for children.
From a child protection and safeguarding perspective, the increased availability of local services is expected to support earlier detection of health, developmental, and mental health concerns. Expanded outpatient capacity allows healthcare professionals to identify potential signs of neglect, abuse, or underlying vulnerabilities during routine visits, enabling timely intervention and referral where necessary.
The inclusion of behavioral health services within the new facilities is also seen as a critical component of safeguarding, as it provides structured support for children experiencing emotional distress, trauma, or family-related challenges. Integrated care models, where multiple specialists work together in a single setting, are expected to improve coordination and ensure that children with complex needs receive comprehensive attention.
The hospital’s leadership noted that the expansion will be supported through collaboration with regional partners, including Mercy Health and University of Toledo, as part of a broader effort to strengthen pediatric healthcare delivery across the region.
Construction and development are projected to continue over the next several years, with the new facilities expected to open between 2028 and 2030. The expansion is also anticipated to create several hundred jobs while reinforcing the hospital’s role in advancing child health, safety, and well-being in northwest Ohio.
