Spotlight of the Week: Libby Nicholson – A Champion for Children’s Advocacy

For decades, Libby Nicholson has dedicated her career to protecting and advocating for children affected by abuse and neglect. As the director of CARE House, Montgomery County’s Children’s Advocacy Center, she has played a pivotal role in ensuring that children and families receive the care, support, and justice they deserve.

Libby’s journey in child advocacy began as a social worker at Montgomery County Children Services and Dayton Children’s Hospital. Through these experiences, she witnessed firsthand the critical need for a coordinated response to child abuse. Her involvement with the Child Protection Task Force introduced her to the concept of children’s advocacy centers, specialized environments where children who have experienced abuse can receive comprehensive services in a safe and supportive setting.

In 1999, Libby took the lead in establishing CARE House, bringing together law enforcement, medical professionals, child protection services, and mental health experts to provide holistic care for children in crisis. Under her leadership, CARE House has served over 8,000 children, offering hope and healing to families throughout Montgomery County.

CARE House is a founding member of the Ohio Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers, which has grown from just seven centers at its inception to 26 across the state. This network operates under the National Children’s Alliance, the accrediting body for advocacy centers nationwide. Libby’s efforts have also contributed to the establishment of two additional advocacy centers in the Dayton region, The Child Advocacy Center of Warren County (opened in 2007) and Michael’s House in Greene County (opened in 2008).

In recognition of her unwavering commitment, Libby was honored with the prestigious Brother Raymond L. Fitz Award in 2013. This award acknowledges individuals who exemplify Brother Ray’s dedication to nurturing and protecting children and families through their daily work in the community.

Libby Nicholson’s impact extends far beyond the walls of CARE House. Her vision, leadership, and dedication have transformed child advocacy efforts in Ohio, ensuring that vulnerable children receive the protection, justice, and support they need.
