Spotlight for the Week: Stephen D. Dackin – A Visionary Leader in Education and Workforce Development

With over 40 years of experience in various educational roles, from classroom educator to district leader, and now as the Director of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, Director Dackin has dedicated his career to improving the educational experiences and opportunities for children and families in Ohio.

Stephen D. Dackin’s career has been guided by a personal mission to serve children and families. His early career began in the classroom, where he first began to understand the critical intersections between educational policy, leadership, and the long-term success of students. Over time, Dackin expanded his influence through roles at the Ohio Department of Education, State Board of Education, and higher education institutions, all while maintaining a focus on improving educational outcomes for students at all levels.

His leadership journey took a significant turn when he became the superintendent of Reynoldsburg City Schools, where he worked tirelessly to foster academic success and equity for all students. Under his leadership, Reynoldsburg City Schools achieved remarkable improvements in student performance, particularly among minority and economically disadvantaged students. Notably, the district became home to one of the nation’s largest science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs, which served over a third of the student body.

One of Dackin’s most notable achievements was his work in transforming the traditional high school experience into one that more closely aligned with the future needs of Ohio’s economy. During his tenure as district superintendent, Dackin led the initiative to reimagine Reynoldsburg High School. The result was the creation of four grades 9-14 college and career academies, each designed to provide students with specialized learning experiences that would equip them for future careers in fields vital to Ohio’s economic growth.

This transformation not only made high school education more relevant to students’ futures but also improved the district’s financial efficiency, making the program both impactful and sustainable.

Beyond K–12 education, Director Dackin’s impact extended to higher education and workforce development. As the Superintendent of School and Community Partnerships for Columbus State Community College, he strengthened ties between local schools, businesses, and the college, expanding opportunities for students to gain postsecondary credentials and real-world experience. He played a crucial role in advancing the Central Ohio Compact, a regional strategy aimed at ensuring 60% of adults in Central Ohio have a postsecondary degree or credential by 2025.

This initiative reflects Dackin’s belief that partnerships between education, business, and community organizations are key to creating a more equitable and skilled workforce. His work at Columbus State Community College helped create pathways that made education more accessible and aligned with the needs of local industries.

In his current role as the Director of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, Dackin continues to leverage his experience and leadership to drive initiatives that connect education with workforce readiness. His leadership focuses on ensuring that Ohio’s education system prepares students not only for academic success but for successful careers and active participation in the state’s economy. His focus on partnerships continues, as he works with educational institutions, businesses, and government entities to build a more cohesive system for preparing young people for the future.

Stephen Dackin’s commitment to education extends beyond his professional life; it is a deeply personal mission that has influenced his family as well. His wife, Susan Dackin, is a retired educator who spent much of her career working in schools. Together, they have raised two daughters, both of whom have carried the family’s legacy of service to others. One of their daughters is an educator, and the other works as an attorney, each contributing in their own way to their community.

While his professional achievements are extensive, Director Dackin maintains a balanced life outside of work. He enjoys golfing, cycling, and spending quality time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. These personal interests reflect his belief in the importance of family, health, and well-being in maintaining a fulfilling life.
