April 3rd, 2024-CANTO, Ohio-A 13-year-old boy from Canton, Ohio, is facing charges for allegedly planning a mass shooting at a local Jewish synagogue, Temple Israel. The boy, whose name remains undisclosed due to his minor status, is accused of posting detailed plans for the attack on the live streaming platform Discord. The charges include inducing panic and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors. Documents from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office reveal that the FBI alerted law enforcement to the Discord posts on September 7, which contained maps of the synagogue and plans for arson and violence.
The boy admitted to involvement in antisemitic and political groups on Discord upon arrest. A trial hearing is scheduled for December 20. Law enforcement emphasizes a zero-tolerance policy towards such threats, while the Anti-Defamation League of Cleveland appreciates swift action and hopes it serves as a lesson against hate speech and threats, especially on social media.
