BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-After dedicating three decades to helping special education students at Bowling Green High School, intervention specialist Dee Szalejko has retired. She leaves behind a legacy of believing in her students and helping them realize their fullest potential. Szalejko’s impact extended beyond graduation, with former students frequently reaching out to maintain their relationships with her.
She saw her role as not letting disabilities define her students, guiding them to excel academically and personally. Szalejko fostered self-confidence and self-advocacy skills in her students, preparing them for life beyond high school. Her departure leaves a void in both the classroom and the community, where she co-founded the “Dear Santa” program. Despite retiring, Szalejko plans to continue her philanthropic work and cherish spending time with her family, including her grandson. Colleagues and staff members lauded Szalejko’s compassion, dedication, and impact on students’ lives, underscoring her invaluable contributions to the school and the community.
