CLEVELAND, Ohio-William Whalen and his team engage in a vital cleanup effort on the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie harbors, facilitated through a partnership between the Port of Cleveland and nonprofit organization Argonaut. Whalen, a graduate of Davis Aerospace Maritime High School, began this initiative during his junior year, gaining valuable experience for a maritime career.
The project aims to provide opportunities for students and address the shortage of maritime workers. Whalen now works full-time on the cleanup boats, removing approximately 300,000 pounds of debris annually. Jared Magyar of the Port of Cleveland emphasizes the importance of removing debris for maritime safety and highlights the program’s role in fostering pride in students’ hometowns. Whalen expresses gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to his community through this initiative.
