TOLEDO, Ohio-Romules Durant, the superintendent of Toledo Public Schools (TPS), has been awarded the 2024 Urban Educator of the Year by the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) at their annual conference. Durant, who has led TPS for 11 years, received the honor over five other urban superintendents. His achievements include successful levy campaigns, increased graduation rates, expanded services for accelerated students, and the opening of five magnet high schools. The award includes a $10,000 scholarship to be awarded to a TPS student. The award honors the legacies of Richard R. Green and Edward Garner and represents 78 urban school districts, including five in Ohio.
