PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -Experts have noted that reading and literacy skills are below expectations nationally, prompting Ohio to launch the “Science of Reading” program aimed at improving student literacy. Educators at Shawnee State University are implementing a phonics-based approach called B.E.A.R. (Building, Emerging, and Achieving Readers) to enhance learning. Stacey Reed, a kindergarten teacher at Portsmouth Elementary, has a Project B.E.A.R. member assisting her class, which improves student focus and skill acquisition due to smaller group sizes. Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the need for all teachers in the state to be retrained in effective reading instruction, supported by a $171 million allocation for reading materials, professional development, and reading coaches.
