The Psychology of Getting back to Routine as Kids Return to School

< 1 min read

CLEVELAND, Ohio-As the new school year begins, both children and parents face significant adjustments in routines and expectations. Kids transitioning from a relaxed summer to a structured school schedule may struggle with sleep changes and increased responsibilities. UH Clinical Psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Harris advises easing into these changes gradually, particularly with sleep, by shifting wake-up times incrementally. Parma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Charles Smialek notes that post-COVID, chronic absenteeism and apathy have become major challenges in education. Supporting children through extracurricular activities can be beneficial, as these often motivate them academically. Harris suggests parents communicate with teachers and explore various opportunities for their children to help ease the transition back to school.
