OHSAA Modifies Student Policy as Ohio’s Trans Athlete Ban Takes Effect

< 1 min read

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) has updated its policy on transgender student-athletes to comply with House Bill 68, which bans transgender females from participating in women’s sports. This law, which also restricts gender-affirming care for trans minors, took effect after a court lifted a restraining order. Previously, the OHSAA allowed transgender girls to compete if they met specific medical criteria, but now the policy aligns with the new law, prohibiting transgender females from joining girls’ teams. This change follows a legal challenge and override of Governor Mike DeWine’s veto of the bill. Advocates argue that the new law undermines trans athletes’ rights, while supporters claim it is necessary to maintain fairness in women’s sports.
