How are Students Getting to School? Parents Share Struggles with Youngstown School Bus Process

< 1 min read

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio-Youngstown City Schools have eliminated high school busing due to a $2 million fine for late arrivals and a shortage of bus drivers, affecting hundreds of students and their families. Parents express frustration and concern for their children’s safety as they adjust to new routines, often relying on unsafe alternatives like public buses or rides from family. Gwendolyn Blakeman and Tonna Carter highlighted the challenges of ensuring their children get to school, while Megan Skaleris faced job complications due to the change. Despite the difficulties, YCSD Chief of Staff Robert Kearns noted that students adapted well to using WRTA public transportation, although many parents are still apprehensive. The district currently has about 51 bus drivers and needs to hire more before considering reinstating school bus services. Kearns emphasized the importance of collaboration to resolve transportation issues and ensure students can attend school safely.
