LEBANON, Ohio-Members of The Gideons International distributed Bibles to students outside Berry Intermediate School in Lebanon, causing concern among parents about religious representation on public property. The Lebanon City Schools spokeswoman stated that the Gideons were on the public sidewalk, and staff ensured students’ safety upon learning about their presence.
While students were offered the option to return the Bible, about 15 people from The Gideons International distributed them to willing students. Concerns were raised about the appropriateness of non-school staff interacting with children. Harold Roark, a Gideon, emphasized that distribution was voluntary and aimed at sharing the gospel, with a focus on older students. He stated that the group respects boundaries and does not force participation. Roark affirmed the right to distribute materials on public sidewalks but clarified they don’t engage with younger than middle school students. The Gideons visit every other year, aiming to cover all Warren County schools.
