Ohio School Closed for Radioactive Material Being Sold ‘as-is’

< 1 min read

PIKETON, Ohio-Zahn’s Corner Middle School in Piketon, southern Ohio, is set to be auctioned on August 17, with a starting bid of $270,000. The 53,000 square foot building on 9.83 acres became notable after being closed in May 2019 due to radioactive contamination. Initial reports indicated enriched uranium inside and neptunium 237 outside the building. The U.S. Department of Energy attributed the contamination to 1950s-1960s stratospheric fallout, while Northern Arizona University suggested it was due to dust emissions from the nearby Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. An independent study is currently finalizing test results to assess contamination levels.
