TOLEDO, Ohio-Toledo, which recorded a peak of 70 homicides in 2021, has seen a decline in violence but still struggles with the impact of such loss. Malcolm Cunningham, appointed in May 2023 to lead the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE), is spearheading efforts to address gun violence. MONSE focuses on high-crime neighborhoods and schools, working with programs like “Save Our Community” to build resilience and relationships with students. Despite progress, challenges remain, including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on education and mental health. Toledo’s new “Peace in Motion” plan aims to reduce gun violence over the next five years by fostering community trust, supporting victims, and enhancing protection.
