TOLEDO, Ohio-Escuela SMART Academy stands out as Toledo Public Schools’ sole bilingual institution. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Day, TPS highlights educators who facilitate English and Spanish learning. Kelvin Santiago, teaching Spanish from third to sixth grade for six years at Escuela, expresses joy in sharing his skills. He emphasizes a curriculum covering basic Spanish, literature, and language fundamentals.
With an average class size of 20-25 students, Santiago’s passion for teaching shines through his interactive approach and dedication to student comprehension. Crystal Mosqueda, an Escuela educator and TPS alumna, values her role in teaching Spanish, drawing from her own experience as a second language learner. She cherishes the connections formed with students and emphasizes Escuela’s supportive community for both students and families, offering afterschool English classes for parents.
