Hunter McKinzie, a senior at Western Brown High School, has been honored with the National Federation of High School’s Spirit of Sport Award, marking the first time an Ohio athlete has received this recognition since 2020. Despite being diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma as a sophomore, McKinzie returned to play two games as a junior. He demonstrated exceptional resilience and dedication to his team, earning praise from his coach and teammates.
Despite breaking his fibula and cracking his tibia in just the second game of his senior season, McKinzie continued to support his team from the sidelines, showcasing his unwavering spirit. The award, given annually to eight recipients who embody the positive spirit of sport, recognizes McKinzie’s remarkable journey and serves as a testament to his perseverance. He received the Section 2 award and is now eligible for the NFHS’s national award.
