Study: Pressure to be “perfect” Causing Burnout for Parents, Mental Health Concerns for Their Children

< 1 min read

COLUMBUS, Ohio-A study conducted by The Ohio State University College of Nursing and the university’s Office of the Chief Wellness Officer highlights the detrimental effects of the pressure to achieve perfection in parenting. The survey of over 700 parents revealed that 57% reported experiencing burnout, which is strongly linked to internal and external expectations.

This pressure leads to negative impacts on both parents and children’s mental health. The study emphasizes that the pursuit of perfection on social media and societal expectations exacerbates parental burnout, resulting in increased depression, anxiety, and stress for parents and behavioral and emotional issues for their children.

The report suggests embracing positive parenting approaches, characterized by warmth, love, structure, and guidance, rather than striving for an unattainable ideal of perfection. It also provides evidence-based solutions and strategies for parents to improve their well-being and strengthen their connection with their children.
