New Lex High School’s Innovative Approach to Workforce Development is Breaking Barriers

NEW LEXINGTON, Ohio-New Lexington High School has garnered attention for its innovative approach to workforce development, blending education with career opportunities effectively. Lt. Governor Jon Husted recently visited the school’s workforce development sites, impressed by its progressive model. The school received a $2.5 million grant to expand its Workforce Development Center, offering programs in advanced manufacturing and healthcare.

Notably, the welding program has produced a significant number of credentialed welders, responding to local demand. The healthcare program boasts partnerships with Genesis HealthCare, providing pathways for students in various healthcare fields. Other initiatives include building trades, electrical apprenticeships, and farming education. New Lex emphasizes options for students beyond traditional college pathways, hosting workforce development signing days to celebrate employment opportunities. Superintendent Casey Coffey sees this approach as crucial for Appalachia, challenging stereotypes and providing diverse opportunities for students.
