How schools make decisions on whether to cancel classes because of weather

As frigid temperatures and winter weather impact the Buckeye State, one central Ohio school district gave Spectrum News 1 insight on how school officials decide whether conditions outside are enough to keep students out of the classroom.

“We look at not only the rate of the precipitation, the timing of the precipitation, wind chill obviously temperature, the sustainability of that temperature, so if it’s gonna maintain either decrease or increase,” said Jamie Lusher, deputy superintendent of South-Western City Schools. “In a perfect world, we’d have school every single day, but we have to be judicious and systematic in our approach to make sure that our students and staff are safe”
