Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Akron Public Schools Facing Financial Issues

< 1 min read

CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) faces financial challenges after the conclusion of federal pandemic funding, necessitating over $130 million in program cuts earlier this year. To address this, CMSD plans to introduce a new levy on the November ballot, with businesses expected to cover over half of the cost.

The owner of a $100,000 home would pay an additional $301 annually. Similarly, Akron Public Schools (APS) are grappling with budget issues, resulting in the elimination of 285 positions. While the loss of COVID-19 funding is a significant factor, APS cites a lack of increased revenue or levy funds in over 12 years as an ongoing challenge. Despite concerns from the community, APS maintains that these cuts are necessary for the district’s fiscal survival, assuring that classrooms will not be compromised by the reductions.
