Chemo Care Bags

MINGO JUNCTION, Ohio-Hills Elementary pupils demonstrated their kindness by assembling 200 chemo care bags for patients at the Tony Teramana Cancer Center. The colorful totes, filled with snacks, cards, journals, and other useful items, were presented to Trinity Health System Foundation officials during a special event in the school gym on May 20. Organizer Sarah Hibbits, inspired by her late mother’s question of who takes care of cancer patients, initiated this annual service-learning project.

Despite facing personal health challenges, including her own cancer diagnosis, Hibbits remained committed to the project, aiming to spread love and kindness to those battling cancer. Over the past nine years, thousands of care bags have been distributed, with this year’s effort involving second-grade students and sponsors to collect items and cover expenses. While the children don’t witness patients’ reactions, they receive thank-you cards, fostering an understanding of the project’s impact. Foundation officials expressed gratitude for the project, emphasizing its significance in reassuring patients that they are not alone and bringing smiles to their faces.
