COLUMBUS, Ohio-Leawood Elementary is making significant strides in literacy, as evidenced by a recent increase in its Ohio School Report Card rating from 2 to 2.5 stars. Principal Shonte Ivey-Spears, who started at Leawood last year, focused on data analysis to identify areas for improvement. By examining assessment data, particularly for Tier 2 students who need targeted support, she trained her staff on the state report card’s requirements. The school’s Building Leadership Team (BLT) engaged in historical data analysis and communicated findings to Teacher-Based Teams to ensure a shared understanding of goals. With a collaborative approach, staff implemented a school-wide writing plan and focused on foundational skills using the Fundations curriculum for grades K-5. Narrative writing was the first targeted topic, allowing students to engage creatively while developing their skills.
