AKRON , Ohio-The Akron Public Schools Board of Education approved a restructuring plan involving $24 million in budget cuts, including the elimination of 285 temporary and vacant positions. Despite protests and discussions lasting over three hours, the plan passed with a 5-1 vote, with one member abstaining from certain cuts and another voting against.
The Akron Education Association criticized the lack of transparency from Superintendent Robinson’s administration and expressed concerns about the impact on educator jobs. District leaders cited reasons for the cuts, including declining enrollment and increased operational costs. While over 200 positions involve the teachers union, only 52 teachers will be laid off, none of whom are currently in classrooms. APS emphasizes the need for additional funding and hopes for voter support for a levy in the fall.
