AKRON, Ohio-This fall, many children are entering pre-kindergarten and kindergarten for the first time, having missed crucial early social interactions during the pandemic. As a result, some students face deficits in speech, behavioral skills, and basic tasks like using pencils and scissors. They also lag in pre-literacy and pre-math skills compared to their peers. Akron Public Schools and local early childhood organizations are addressing these gaps by expanding their pre-kindergarten programs. The district’s director of early learning, Jennifer Douglas, is optimistic that with strong support and positive expectations, children will quickly build necessary skills.
