MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio-Maple Heights High School has been recognized with Ohio’s Purple Star Award for its exceptional support of military families, with over 50% of its students having family members serving in the military. Principal Markiel Perkins, a Coast Guard veteran, prioritized earning this designation, ensuring students like Devin Jones, who enlisted in the U.S. Army, feel supported.

Sophomore Jovannah Nichols, whose father serves in the U.S. Navy, finds meaning in seeing the Purple Star banner in the hallways. The designation resonates with staff members like David Murray, a U.S. Air Force veteran, who feels he can make a difference in the students’ lives. Senior Cheyenne Mickler, aspiring to join the ROTC program at the University of Kentucky, appreciates the school’s respect and support for military-connected students.
