CLEVELAND, Ohio-Thieves known as the ‘Kia boys’ are using advanced technology to steal cars more easily. They employ handheld devices that intercept signals from key fobs when owners unlock their cars, enabling them to unlock the vehicles later. These devices, legal in the US but banned in some countries, exploit vulnerabilities in car key fob signals, which operate on radio frequencies. Cybersecurity expert Paul Sems warns that older car models and Kia vehicles are particularly vulnerable. He advises car owners to be vigilant and suggests automakers enhance encryption to better protect against such thefts.
