TOLEDO, Ohio-For the past 80 days, over 500 teachers, nurses, and staff at Washington Local Schools have been working without a new contract, raising concerns about pay and support for students. Jeff Christoffers, a fourth-grade teacher and spokesperson for the Teachers’ Association, emphasized the critical role that staff play in the district despite being the lowest-paid in the area while working the second-most hours. At a recent board meeting, more than 100 staff members advocated for a resolution to the stalled negotiations, which began in March and have now entered mediation. Teachers are seeking better compensation and additional support services for students. Jennifer Gent, president of the Teachers’ Association, highlighted the resilience and commitment of her colleagues as they continue to push for improvements despite the challenges. The district has expressed optimism about resuming negotiations soon.
